A city councilor mulled of pushing for the realization of online cockfighting to make money for the city’s coffers. Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang, chair of the City Council Committee on Ways and Means and Appropriation and Committee on Games and Amusement online cockfight is approved by the Congress and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation.
He said despite the reduction of COVID-19 positive cases in the city, only a few have the confidence to spend time with their families to eat outside the restaurants, consequently, reducing the taxes from the people.
Dayanghirang said that generally, the business sector has not recovered fully due to the onslaught of the pandemic since March 2020 and up to the present.
This situation prompted Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio to tell him to study the online cockfight or electronic sabong.
Dayanghirang learned based on his initial public hearing on online cockfight yesterday that other local government units have created an ordinance to increase the money in their coffers through online sabong.
According to him, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation, Cockpit operators’ cooperative locally and nationwide were well represented. Dayanghirang bared that the local cockpit operators alone could not afford to hold an electronic cockfight because they have to pay P70-Million initially to the PAGCOR in getting the franchise.
He said in every sultada, the operators have to pay the national government P2,500.
Dayanghirang urged Manila operators to apply at the City Hall, but he has to wait for an endorsement from Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, if she allows them to operate.
He is also preparing the proposed ordinance to this effect. Dayanghirang revealed that it would reach 350 sultadas all over the country daily which require 700 cockfighters.
Because of this, all cockfight operators have united to conduct the cockfights where people can place their bets.
Dayanghirang said he is studying the dues that would go to the city and would submit the proposed ordinance to the mayor for further study and approval.
The councilor also bared that with this set-up, the virtual cockfight will be done in Manila where the people would place their bets like the lotto draws.
Dayanghirang said there is still a need to define the time of placing bets, the type of cockfighters to bet, and the payment to the winning bettor and as to how much will go to the coffers of the local government.
He said the broadcast media to be used might be the television where operators have to pay the broadcast fee, while the bettors have to pay for the amusement tax.
